5 Steps

Privacy is a major concern for many messaging app users. If you share your iPhone with others or simply want an extra layer of security for your sensitive conversations, WhatsApp's Chat Lock feature is exactly what you need. This feature allows you to secure specific individual or group chats behind Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.

In this guide, we will show you exactly how to lock a WhatsApp chat on your iPhone, how to access it later, and how to set up a secret code to completely hide your locked chats folder.

1. Why Use Chat Lock on WhatsApp?

When you lock a chat on WhatsApp, several privacy-enhancing things happen:

  • The conversation is moved from your main inbox to a dedicated Locked Chats folder.
  • To access the locked chat, you must authenticate using your iPhone's Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode.
  • Notification contents (messages and sender names) are automatically hidden for locked chats. You will only see a generic "WhatsApp: 1 new message" notification.
  • Media shared in locked chats is not automatically saved to your iPhone's Photos app.

2. How to Lock a WhatsApp Chat

Locking a chat on your iPhone is a quick and straightforward process. Follow these steps:

1

Open WhatsApp

Launch the WhatsApp application on your iPhone.

2

Select the Chat

Open the individual or group chat that you want to lock.

3

Open Contact Info

Tap on the contact's name or the group's name at the very top of the screen to open the chat information page.

4

Enable Chat Lock

Scroll down the information page and tap on 'Chat Lock'.

5

Confirm with Face ID / Touch ID

Toggle on 'Lock this chat with Face ID' (or Touch ID), and confirm your identity when prompted.

Note:Archived vs. Locked

Archived chats are just hidden from the main view but can still be opened by anyone. Locked chats require biometric authentication to open.

3. How to Access Locked Chats

Once you have locked a chat, it disappears from your regular chat list. Here is how you can find and open your locked conversations:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
  • Swipe down on your chat list. The Locked Chats folder will appear at the top.
  • Tap on Locked Chats.
  • Authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to open the folder and view your hidden conversations.

4. How to Use a Secret Code (Hide Locked Chats)

For even more privacy, WhatsApp allows you to hide the "Locked Chats" folder completely. You can set a custom secret code (which can include emojis), and you will need to type this code into the WhatsApp search bar to find your locked chats.

  1. Go to your Locked Chats folder and authenticate.
  2. Tap the Settings icon (or three dots) in the top right corner.
  3. Tap Secret Code and create a unique code.
  4. Go back to Chat Lock Settings and toggle on Hide Locked Chats.

Now, the Locked Chats folder will no longer appear when you swipe down. To access it, simply type your secret code into the main WhatsApp search bar.

Tip:Secret Code Memory

Make sure you remember your secret code! If you forget it, you can clear it from WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Chat Lock, but this will unlock and clear all your locked chats.

5. How to Turn Off Chat Lock

If you no longer need to lock a specific conversation, you can easily remove it from the Locked Chats folder:

  • Open the locked chat you want to unlock.
  • Tap the contact's name or group name at the top of the screen.
  • Scroll down and tap on Chat Lock.
  • Toggle off the switch and confirm with Face ID or Touch ID.

The conversation will immediately return to your regular inbox, and notifications will be displayed normally again.
